The world's best-looking motorcycles

When ordinary bloggers don't have anything to say about current events, what can they do? Nothing!

I, on the other hand, can post cool pictures of amazing hand-built motorcycles from the good folks at Confederate Motor Company.

Here's their powerful Hellcat:

And the new 2006 Wraith:
The Hellcat will set you back $61,000, but the Wraith is a steal at just $45,000 on pre-order. Supplies are limited — act now!

Wow... those do look sweet. I wonder if I can get a test drive!

Actually you can, with their "Fly and Ride"  program:

Immerse yourself in the charms of the Big Easy as a V.I.P. guest of Confederate Motorcycles. Stay two nights in the historic French Quarter. Dine in our world-class restaurants. Soak up the jazz at Preservation Hall. Take in the many galleries in the Arts and Warehouse District. And test ride a Confederate Hellcat through the scenic backroads of the New Orleans Northshore region. Should you decide to make a down payment toward the purchase of a Confederate Hellcat, the entire weekend, including your airfare, is compliments of Confederate Motorcycles.

Perhaps I have no taste. Or perhaps I'm just old. But I think the Wraith is hideous. (The other one is merely ugly.)

Hmm… I'd have guessed you'd like the Wraith for the same reasons you liked Santiago Calatrava's Seville Bridge.

The Wraith's frame is stiffer than a normal motorcycle's despite using less material. The bulk of the chassis is a single carbon tube that also houses the rear monoshock. And the gas tank hangs below the engine, lowering the bike's center of gravity.

The blocky part up front is an innovative front suspension inspired by the work of legendary New Zealand bike designer John Britten, as described here. It's a lighter, yet stronger design that uses rotational bearings instead of telescoping tubes (like traditional front forks), reducing the relative motion of the front wheel and suspension relative to the rest of the bike. This eliminates "chatter" when braking or turning, providing better control.

I think the end result is beautiful for the way it combines these performance improvements in a design that avoids ornamentation yet somehow reminds me of "old-fashioned" (i.e. Jules Verne or H.G. Welles-style) technology... in terms of Otomo anime, it's more Steamboy than Akira.

The Hellcat, on the other hand, is simply bad-ass. A straight-on profile shot arguably doesn’t do it justice, but I used it for comparison purposes. You can check out another view here , if you’re so inclined. I love the rugged Road Warrior-meets-Terminator appearance. It's a mean machine with no flash and no facades.

Oh, well... to each his own.

I agree that the Hellcat looks badass and is a beautiful bike, but the beauty flows from function--the efficiency and novelty of the design and the dynamics of the frame geometry and power distribution--so the aesthetic appeal is going to be hard to understand unless one already knows a lot about bikes.
The Wraith is even more so. Ugly by any reasonable standard, but still fascinating.

The riding position looks uncomfortable as hell, though.
