Obligatory McCain-Feingold post

I haven't blogged about the Federal Election Commission's coming crackdown on blogs via the McCain-Feingold campaign reform law, simply because I haven't had anything special to add to the discussion.

About all I can say at present is that trying to regulate the freedom of individual American citizens to engage in political speech, whether over the Internet or in any other medium, has to be the worst idea since Isadora Duncan decided to put on a long scarf.

FOLLOW-UP:
A Guy in Pajamas suggests in the comments that bloggers outside the U.S. — like those of us here in Japan — could offer to host U.S. bloggers' "banned" political commentary.

I myself was wondering how this silly law is going to be enforced outside America's borders. Generally, if my understanding is correct, foreigners cannot make financial contributions to American campaigns. But if blogging is deemed to be a contribution "in kind", does that mean no foreigner anywhere in the world is going to be allowed to blog about a U.S. election? Good luck enforcing that one, guys.

Like, dude, we live in Japan. I suggest we start offering to post banned political commentary on the Internet here. We could charge \10 a post and make a killing. Whaddya think?

In some ways, the worst part about this is that they don't plan to enforce it, at least not uniformly and consistantly.

However, if someone makes too big a wave, they could be cracked down on.

I don't think that this will actually come into being, but if it does I plan to practice civil disobedience.

Sadly, my blog is small enough no one will notice.

This guy is the kind of business person I can relate to. You've got a future in business if you don't already.
