The media myth that ordinary Iraqis support the insurgents is rapidly becoming impossible to maintain.
After last month's historic elections, ordinary residents of the village of al-Mudhariya fought back against a gang of insurgents who tried to punish them for voting. The villagers killed five insurgents, wounded another eight, and burned their car. Their righteous fury caused Baghdad-based Australian Broadcasting Company correspondent Mark Willacy to observe, dryly, that "It would appear that people are getting sick of the insurgency."
Elsewhere, voters killed by the insurgents were mourned as martyrs, while the remains of suicide bombers were spat upon.
And this past Wednesday, Reuters reports, a crowd of Iraqis noticed a man "mingling amongst them who appeared to be wearing a vest strapped with explosives, like those used in suicide bombings" -- and promptly beat him to death.
You don't have to support such instances of mob justice to nevertheless be heartened that Iraqis have no illusions as to who their enemies truly are.

I like your mix of news and motorcylces, so I've added your site to my blogroll. I ride a Kawasaki Concours, on which I've completed two 1,000 mile days, and I know for a fact that it will pull at least a ton and a half with rpms to spare. Unfortunately, the stock windscreen begins to shake violently at about 135.

Try Laminar Lip windscreens. I think they make one for the concours.

When the state fails you, all you have is yourself to rely on.
If you call the police and they do not come, then you have to solve the problem yourself.
That is want the Iraqies are doing. I hope the situation does not continue, but as far as i am concerned they can kill every single person that looks like an insurgent if they want.
You have to realize that muslims see death and destruction everysingle day on the networks they watch, their TV is a whole more viloent than ours. To me they seem to be more tolerent of viloence than we are.

The need for this violence shows a weakness in the state, which is not good for us and a clear sign that we need to continue training the Iraqi police and army.
However, the fact that the Iraqi people are willing and able to defend their own interests, and that they seem to be choosing that their own interest is a democratic government are very good signs indeed.

We should keep training the British police too, I guess.
You can never count on the state for everything.
