"Ahh, f**k it. Let's go bowling."
Walter Sobchack, The Big Lebowski
From the Asahi Shimbun, May 7:
Even as the scale of the April 25 train disaster here was unfolding, 43 employees of rail operator West Japan Railway Co. chose to go out bowling, sources said.
...JR West sources said none of the 43 participants in the bowling event, conductors based in Osaka's Tennoji Ward, suggested canceling the planned outing. They started bowling at 12:30 p.m., just hours after a commuter train derailed, sending the first two cars plowing into the first-floor garage of a multistory apartment building.
Officials said those involved did not have to work that day but had learned of the train accident. Thirteen of them, mainly young employees, knew a major disaster was unfolding that involved many casualties.
Still, they met at a bowling alley in Higashi-Sumiyoshi Ward in Osaka and stayed for about 90 minutes.

Unrelated to this particular post, but good work lately. Have you read the NY Times post about Chinese prison labor? Haven't finished it myself, so I wonder (not much) whether it'll mention the "liao gai" reeducation camps ("No," says Walter Duranty). Anyway,

Thanks for the compliment. I haven't seen the NYT article yet; I'll check it out.
Also, when pasting in a long URL, to keep it from runing into the sidebar, just use the "Link" button right above the comment text field. That way you can make it look nice and short, like this .
Thanks.
